Winter on Phillip IslandWhy are sunsets in winter on Phillip Island more spectacular than those in summer? We get different cloud patterns in autumn and winter when the angle of the Earth tilts a little bit further away from the Sun. And cold fronts that cross the Australian continent can penetrate a little bit further north than in the summer. These cold fronts give us the mid to high-level cloud - so it's the combination of cloud, the cold and the tilt of the Earth. The most spectacular sunsets are from the altostratus clouds – a mid-level layered cloud. It looks like a thick layer of white cloud during the day, but it's thick enough to give us rich red and pink colours once the sun starts setting. Higher in the atmosphere, there can be wispy cirrus clouds, and they can give quite stunning sunsets as well, but the colour is usually not quite as rich as from the lower-level cloud. (Source: ABC News) I find one of the best spots to see great sunsets on Phillip Island is Cape Woolamai – see the photo below!
