September 2025: Issue #076 Hello, Welcome to Island Hopper! I hope you will discover lots about Phillip Island and the surrounding area.
TIDAL Seafood FestivalThe TIDAL Seafood Festival returns to the San Remo Foreshore from Friday September 19 until Sunday September 21.The festival is a celebration of San Remo’s fishing village heritage and it’s continuing links to the fishing industry. The traditional Blessing of the Fleet will take place on Saturday morning. The Blessing of the Fleet is a tradition going back hundreds of years to Mediterranean fishing communities, with evidence of blessings in Italy in the 15th century. The events that are part of the ritual vary from country to country and can range from a simple ceremony to a festival including church services, parades, dancing, feasting, and contests. The blessing is to ensure the fishing fleet has a safe and bountiful season. On Sunday, enjoy the National Deckies Race. The event comprises teams of two doing the daily tasks of a deckhand on a commercial fishing vessel. The race has four parts - roll a cray pot 25m, fill a small fish bin with ice and carry it 25m, pull a rope with a life preserver 25m, and toss a float into a cray pot. A hotly contested event for prize money and bragging rights! During the festival there will be food trucks, fresh seafood, bar, live music, children’s entertainment, variety stalls, demonstrations, stage shows and lots more.
Save the Koala DaySave The Koala Day is celebrated on the last Friday in September every year. The objective of these celebrations is to save koalas and their natural habitats and raise awareness to prevent them from becoming extinct. Today they face the danger of disappearing due to human activities and the climate crisis. This year, the day will be celebrated on September 26 at the Koala Conservation Reserve, Phillip Island. And to add to the fun, the day is the AFL Grand Final public holiday, so there will be football-inspired activities between 11.00am and 2.00pm. Other children’s activities include face painting, a junior ranger quest, colouring competition, games, footy-themed food and more. Join in the fun and support koalas at the same time! Bookings required at penguins.org.au
